www.wrington.net Obverse of William III sixpence coin found by Jonathan Talbot in a Wrington field. Designs in Spink Catalogue Prices as against condition of coins in Spink Catalogue Reverse of coin Click thumbnail to enlarge Lower case 'y' under the bust of William III shows it was minted in York The 'Early Harp' in the design classes it as 3525 in the Spink Catalogue There are 3 prices given for coins in the catalogue, and these are based on their condition - Fine, Very Fine, and Extremely Fine. This particular coin would be classed as Fine and below, as it is bent in two places as well as being worn in places. So, if it were Extremely Fine every curl in the king’s hair would be visible as well as details like his eyes. On this coin his hair is undetailed and no features are apparent on his face at all. The coin could have been bent by the plough, but alternatively, it may have been bent on purpose, as it is bent in the manner used to create love tokens in a kind of Z shape. It wouldn’t then be extremely bent, but just enough to indicate its purpose as token of affection for a loved one. Jonathan Talbot
