In an e-mail [see Schmoose page 2016] from his home in New Zealand, George Crook asked about the hollow oak tree in the Rydings Farm field below Long Lane from Branches Cross. He and his mates used to play in and around it when they were youngsters. He asked specifically about its circumference so that he could calculate its age. It turned out to be 14ft 2ins, which according to the Woodland Trust’s ready reckoner [see below] would suggest something over 200 years.
